Survey: What’s your purpose when you start building a website?

7 comments Posted by Athanasios

I have been thinking of that issue for a lot of time now…what’s everyone’s purpose when they buy their domain name and start building their website!
At first i thought it would be money, but when i started my own site to share information and knowledge without worrying about monetizing it, i chaned my mind.
So, for the last week in 3 communities(HostBidder, Admin-lounge, Helpme-net) and in various Chat networks and webmaster chatrooms i conducted a survey.

NOTE: In this survey more than 100 people took part and they were all allowed to vote only once.

The results have definitely been very interesting, take a look at our graph!(its in % format)

GlobeIRC survey graph

What we get from the above graph?

  1. The very encouraging percentage(actually 50% is way too much!) of people who care more abou the quality of their websites, and want to offer and share information and support. I guess that if that trend continues, the WWW will get rid of the crappy websites and it will become once again the paradise of information!
  2. Despite the fact it’s only 20% yet it shows us that the people who get into the web development of communities blogs etc have as goal to earn only money. That means that there are lots of “copywriters” and writers who may be copying/pasting information on their websites just to get a few ad clicks.
  3. The Other was originally asking the voters to say what is their “other”. Most times it was a combination of making money and sharing useful original information and sometimes it was about fun projects and similar actions too. That’s good i guess:)
  4. Here is the sad…Unfortunately noone seemed to care that much about charities and would spend money/time/effort to create a charity website. Even those who intend to share information were not willing to go with charities..Pitty, but that’s life.

Well, that was our first survey and it definitely gave us some interesting results to focus on!

What is more, i have decided to include the best reactions/posts to this survey. Take a look at some really good views upon the subject!

Well, As I see Internet is a big media to share your thoughts and information. You can get the attention of several people at a time.At the same time, there are some trustworthy programs going on which would help you to montize that “attention”.As far as I am concerned, the primary goal when I started was just to make a website which was on the “internet”.I was taught basic HTML in the school’s NIIT course and then the broadband connection came and I got lost into this world. After some time, an acquaintance of mine told me that I could get paid from a website- by selling links.I searched on the web for “Get Paid with your website”(This was the exact phrase) and found out programs like Google Adsense, bidvertiser and adbrite and many others. But since I did not know about domain names, web hosting and all those things then, I could not apply for Adsense or any other thing at that time. After a few months, when I became somewhat more familiar with those things,I Signed up for bidvertiser.Earn some 1.9$ from that ()..But never got paid. Then from there till now…Just experimenting and getting experience. Also I have started learning xHTML & CSS.

Well, that was me..So I would say that I started out just “for being online” or you can say” just for that pleasure of having a website”.Then as I came to know about money making programs,I tried to try them (:p) .Ofcourse,I did Trial and error and failed sometimes. But I would go on with “Other”.

Well, I made my first website using Homestead’s WYSIWYG editor when I was 10 years old. I just had a lot of fun doing it, even though it was a terrible website and it was shut down because it was apparently a “free trial period”.

When I was 14 years old, I got a computer/internet again (I didn’t have it the previous few years). I heard about Freewebs, and then I instantly wanted to make another site just for fun It didn’t really have a point, but I ended up getting better with HTML, and then the site evolved into the “Cloudflash” of today.

I’ve been running my site for the past 3 and a half years because I like to, and because I like to show my games/animations/comics off to the general public. I’ve never really cared about making money off of my site or anything like that.

My true intention is to share interesting pieces of informations and data. Of course, as everyone would say, if I’d earn some money on the way, it won’t be a problem for me. :D

Well I build websites to adquire more knowledge and share my experiences with others. If I make money in that process I won’t complain at all xD

I built my blog actually just for me. I don’t want to reach #1 in google or anything similar. I wanted to have something like my online biography or even resume. I even promote my blog to friends only or partners.

So, we saw some very interesting views!
Looking forward for feedback! More surveys coming soon. If you’d like to take part, and don’t know how, just comment here(with a valid e-mail) and i will send you an e-mail myself with info:)

Best regards,

Athanasios P.
